Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems Explained

Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems Explained by John Amato Hyundai Superstore

There are two types of Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems Direct and Indirect.  Here we will give you explanations of both

Direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses pressure monitoring sensors within each tire that monitor specific pressure levels.  Not just wheel revolution information from the anti-lock brake system

Sensors in the direct TPMS may even provide tire temperature readings.  The direct tire pressure monitory system sends all of its data to a centralized control module where it is analyzed, interpreted, and if tire pressure is lower than it should be, transmitted directly to your dashboard where the indicator light illuminates.  A direct tire pressure monitor usually sends all of its data wirelessly.  Each sensor has a unique serial number.  This is how the system not only distinguishes between itself and systems on other vehicles, but also among pressure readings for each individual tire.

Many manufacturers use proprietary technology for these highly specialized systems, so replacing a TPMS in a way that is consistent and compatible with your vehicle will require an experienced, knowledgeable technician.  If you have any questions schedule an appointment at John Amato Hyundai Superstore

Some advantages of Direct TPMS

  • Delivers actual tire pressure readings from inside the tire
  • Not prone to inaccuracies because of tire rotations or tire replacements
  • Batteries inside the sensors usually last for about 10 years
  • May be included in the vehicle’s spare tire

Indirect TPMS Information

The indirect TPMS typically relies on wheel speed sensors that the anti lock brake system uses.  These sensors measure the rate of revolution each wheel is making and can be used by on-board computer systems to compare with each other and to the vehicle operation data such as speed

Based on the rate of revolution of each wheel,, the computer can interpret the relative size of the tires on your vehicle.  When a wheel starts spinning faster than expected, the computer calculates that the tire is under inflated and alerts the driver of the vehicle accordingly.

An indirect tire pressure monitory system does not actually measure tire pressure.  It simply measures how fast your tires are rotating and sends signals to the computer that will actuate the indicator light when something in the rotation seems amiss

Advantages of Indirect TPMS

  • Relatively inexpensive compared to direct TPMS
  • Requires less programming/ maintenance over the years than the direct TPMS
  • Less overall installation maintenance then its direct counterpart

Winter tips for your vehicle preperation

With the winter season right around the corner its time to start preparing your vehicle. An investment of your time of an hour to ensure your vehicle is checked to have peace of mind and to avoid the cost of a breakdown in inclement weather.

Scheduling your vehicle for an inspection at John Amato Hyundai Superstore is a sensible way to avoid the inconvenience of being stranded out in the cold with the unexpected expense of emergency repairs

Here are a few suggestions

  1.  Have the battery and charging system check for optimum performance
  2. Clean, flush and have new antifreeze put in the cooling system.  As a general rule you should have this done at least every 18 months
  3. Have the heaters, defrosters, and windshield wipers inspected.  Wipers should be replaced at least every 6 months
  4. Have your tire tread depth and tire pressure checked.  If snow and ice are a problem consider special tires designed to grip the road.  During the winter months have your tire pressure checked weekly
  5. An oil change is necessary.  Keep with the manufacturer guidelines.  Dirty oil can spell trouble for your engine.  Have the technicians at John Amato Hyundai Superstore also check the air and transmission filters at the same time.  If needed have them changed
  6. Consider having a tune up.  Winter weather magnifies existing problems, such as hard starts, sluggish performance and rough idling.
  7. Have your brakes inspected.
  8. Check your exhaust system  Carbon monoxide leaks are especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed
  9. Have your exterior and interior lights checked to make sure they are working properly and aimed correctly

Vehicle Repossession Facts from Amato Automotive

When you finance a vehicle, the lender holds certain rights on the vehicle until you make  your final loan payment.  This means that if you default on the contract by missing payments, the lender may have the right to repossess the vehicle.  If you are having financial trouble, contact your lender immediately.  Do not wait until you have missed more than 1 payment.  The lender may not need a court order or give advance warning to repossess the vehicle.  In some cases the lender may have the right to repossess after one missed payment

Before the vehicle is repossessed

You may be able to afford the payments by decreasing your expenses or increasing your income.  Review your budget and carefully look it over.

If you are unable to make budget changes that will enable you to afford your monthly payments you do have a few options

  • You can contact the lender and ask for assistance
  • If you can get more than you owe on the loan, you may choose to sell the vehicle
  • You may give the vehicle back to the lender.  This is called a voluntary repossession.

Do not be afraid to contact your lender.  In most cases, they want you to repay the loan. The earlier that you make contact with them the better.

When you took out the loan, you promised to make the payments as agreed.  However you may ask the lender what can be done to assist your situation

If your vehicle gets repossessed

If you are unable to make an arrangement with you lender and do not make your payments, eventually they can take the next step and hire someone to repossess the vehicle.  Once that happens, you have the right to reinstate the contract by paying all past due installments, late fees, and cost the lender has incurred in repossessing and storing of the vehicle

If you are unable to reinstate the contract, the lender will then sell the vehicle at auction.  They will notify you of the auction date, and you may attend and bid on the vehicle.  Whether you or someone else buys the vehicle you are responsible for the deficiency balance that the vehicle sells for.  A deficiency balance is the difference between the amount that you owe on the loan and the price the vehicle sells for plus repossession, storage and auction costs.

The deficiency balance is an unsecured debt. Some lenders may sue for the sum, while others may forgive it.  If the lender does forgive it, the IRS will consider that amount income and assess taxes due.
