Leasing vs Buying Answers

When deciding to upgrade your vehicle several customers have questions on whether leasing or buying is the right route for them.

At John Amato Hyundai we are here to answer your questions to assist you with the process and decision

With the list below it may answer your questions on which route you should take

  Buying Leasing
Ownership You own the vehicle and get to keep it as long as you want it. You don’t own the vehicle. You get to use it but must return it at the end of the lease unless you decide to buy it.
Up-front costs They include the cash price or a down payment, taxes, registration and other fees. They typically include the first month’s payment, a refundable security deposit, a down payment, taxes, registration and other fees.
Monthly payments Loan payments are usually higher than lease payments because you’re paying off the entire purchase price of the vehicle, plus interest and other finance charges, taxes, and fees. Lease payments are almost always lower than loan payments because you’re paying only for the vehicle’s depreciation during the lease term, plus interest charges (called rent charges), taxes, and fees.
Early termination You can sell or trade in your vehicle at any time. If necessary, money from the sale can be used to pay off any loan balance. If you end the lease early, early-termination charges can be almost as costly as sticking with the contract.
Vehicle return You’ll have to deal with selling or trading in your car when you decide you want a different one. You can return the vehicle at lease-end, pay any end-of-lease costs, and walk away.
Future value The vehicle will depreciate but its cash value is yours to use as you like. On the plus side, its future value doesn’t affect you financially. On the negative side, you don’t have any equity in the vehicle.
Mileage You’re free to drive as many miles as you want. (But higher mileage lowers the vehicle’s trade-in or resale value.) Most leases limit the number of miles you may drive, often 12,000 to 15,000 per year. (You can negotiate a higher mileage limit.) You’ll have to pay charges for exceeding your limits.
Excessive wear and tear You don’t have to worry about wear and tear, but it could lower the vehicle’s trade-in or resale value. Most leases hold you responsible. You’ll have to pay extra charges for exceeding what is considered normal wear and tear.
End of term At the end of the loan term (typically four to five years), you have no further payments and you have built equity to help pay for your next vehicle. At the end of the lease (typically two to four years), you’ll have to finance the purchase of the car or lease or buy another.
Customizing The vehicle is yours to modify or customize as you like. Because the lessor wants the vehicle returned in sellable condition, any modifications or custom parts you add will need to be removed before you return the car. If there is any residual damage, you’ll have to pay to have it fixed.

Understanding leasing

When trying to decide whether to lease a new vehicle, it is important to understand how the financial mechanics of leasing compared to an auto loan.

When  you lease, you borrow the entire value of the vehicle.  For example when you drive away in a $36000 leased vehicle, you are immediately tying up the entire $36000 that the finance company gave to the dealership

With a loan  your payments are based on the entire cost of the vehicle.  For a 36-month loan on a $36000 vehicle, the principal portion of the payments averages $1000 month.  But with a lease, you pay back only the vehicle’s decline in value (depreciation value) while you are using it.

Since the $360600 vehicle might depreciate about $18000 over that same 36 month term, the principle portion of the monthly lease payment would be base on $500, about half as much as the loan.  Of course at the end of the lease, you have to return the vehicle unless you buy it out at the end of the lease

In both cases the net principal you pay back $18000

Add Finance Charge

In addition to the principal portion of the payment, there are also finance charges, the interest rate to borrow money.  These are much higher for a lease because you are paying back the cost of a leased car more slowly, $500 a month for a lease vs $1000 for a loan.  That leave a grater unpaid balance that is subject to the fiance charge month after month.

In exchange for the lower payments that come with a lease, you are paying a higher finance charge. That additional cost would be offset by the sales tax break lesses receive.

Does it make sense to lease?

The financial workings of leasing sometimes confuses people and it is not for everyone.

In some cases leases are the best way to get rid of the negative equity of your current vehicle loan.

When you opt for a longer term loan, for example 6 years, this puts you at risk of “being upside down” for some time. This is where you owe more on the vehicle that the vehicle is worth.  If you decide to trade in the car early the resale or insurance value of your vehicle will likely be less than you still owe.  If you like to drive new vehicles every few years. Leasing is a great option for you.

Winter tips for your vehicle preperation

With the winter season right around the corner its time to start preparing your vehicle. An investment of your time of an hour to ensure your vehicle is checked to have peace of mind and to avoid the cost of a breakdown in inclement weather.

Scheduling your vehicle for an inspection at John Amato Hyundai Superstore is a sensible way to avoid the inconvenience of being stranded out in the cold with the unexpected expense of emergency repairs

Here are a few suggestions

  1.  Have the battery and charging system check for optimum performance
  2. Clean, flush and have new antifreeze put in the cooling system.  As a general rule you should have this done at least every 18 months
  3. Have the heaters, defrosters, and windshield wipers inspected.  Wipers should be replaced at least every 6 months
  4. Have your tire tread depth and tire pressure checked.  If snow and ice are a problem consider special tires designed to grip the road.  During the winter months have your tire pressure checked weekly
  5. An oil change is necessary.  Keep with the manufacturer guidelines.  Dirty oil can spell trouble for your engine.  Have the technicians at John Amato Hyundai Superstore also check the air and transmission filters at the same time.  If needed have them changed
  6. Consider having a tune up.  Winter weather magnifies existing problems, such as hard starts, sluggish performance and rough idling.
  7. Have your brakes inspected.
  8. Check your exhaust system  Carbon monoxide leaks are especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed
  9. Have your exterior and interior lights checked to make sure they are working properly and aimed correctly
